What is Les Miserables about?
Victor Hugo's 1862 novel follows Jean Valjean, a convict freed after nineteen years in the galleys, whose life is turned when a bishop answers his theft of silver with mercy. Across Fantine's fall into poverty, Valjean's promise to rescue her daughter Cosette, his years of flight from the police inspector Javert, and the student barricade of June 1832, Hugo tests the conflict between law and conscience, and between guilt and redemption. Between chapters of story, he pauses for essays on Waterloo, convents, street children, slang and the sewers of Paris, arguing that misery and ignorance, not wicked people alone, are what society must fix.

A Bishop Who Gave His Palace Away
In 1815 Charles-François-Bienvenu Myriel, aged about seventy-five, was the Bishop of D——, a small mountain town in France. Hugo opens the book with many portraits of him; this summary keeps a few.
Soon after he arrived, the bishop visited the crowded town hospital. His own palace next door was far too big for him. So he gave the palace to the sick and moved into the hospital. From his salary of 15,000 francs he kept 1,000 for himself and gave the rest away. The poor called him Monseigneur Bienvenu, which means “Welcome,” and he liked the name.
A Door That Was Never Locked
The bishop lived simply with his sister and an old servant, Madame Magloire. He had the locks taken off his front door, so anyone could come in at any hour by pushing the latch. He wrote that a priest's door should always be open.
Once he crossed mountains where a band of robbers hid, to visit poor shepherds. Later the robbers' leader, Cravatte, sent him church treasures that the gang had stolen. The bishop believed that God, not locks, guards a house.
Two Meetings with Death
Once a man was sentenced to death for murder. The prison priest was ill, and the local priest refused to go. The bishop said it was his own duty. He stayed with the condemned man until the end, even on the scaffold. Afterwards, deeply shaken, he asked by what right humans take a life, since death belongs to God.
Later the bishop visited G——, a dying old man who had served in the Revolution and whom the town feared. At first the bishop was cold, but the old man defended his life, and the bishop was moved. At the end, the bishop knelt and asked for his blessing. Then the old man died.
