A Dynasty Begins to Crack

The novel opens with an idea: empires rise out of chaos, and they fall back into it. Now the Han empire is rotting, and the book blames two emperors. Emperor Huan trusted the eunuchs, palace servants who held great power, instead of honest officials. The next emperor, Ling, did not support a plot against them, and the plotters were put to death. After that, nobody could stop the eunuchs.

Bad signs fill Emperor Ling's reign: a green snake on the throne, an earthquake, floods, a mountainside that falls. The novel calls them too many to be chance. Meanwhile a gang of eunuchs called the Ten Imperial Attendants, led by Zhang Rang, runs the palace. The emperor ignores loyal ministers, and across the land people turn to rebellion.

One rebellion is led by Zhang Jue and his two brothers. The story says an old immortal gives him a sacred book. He learns magic, hands out charms during a plague, and gathers hundreds of thousands of followers. A song spreads: the blue sky is dying, and a yellow sky is rising. A follower betrays his plot inside the palace, so he calls his armies out early. His fighters wrap yellow cloth around their heads and are called the Yellow Headbands. The emperor's troops scatter.

Three Strangers Swear Brotherhood

A local governor, Liu Yan, posts a call for volunteers. A poor man reads it and sighs. He is Xuande (Liu Bei), twenty-eight years old. He sells mats and sandals, but his family descends from the emperors. A wine and pork seller named Zhang Fei hears the sigh and offers to raise men with him. At an inn they meet Guan Yu, a wanderer who left home after killing a bully and now wants to volunteer.

The next day, in the peach orchard behind Zhang Fei's house, the three make offerings to Heaven and Earth. They swear to be brothers although they come from three families. They promise to protect the people, to rescue each other, and to die on the same day. If they ever act without honour, they ask Heaven and the people to bring them down. Xuande becomes the eldest, Guan Yu the second, and Zhang Fei the youngest.

About five hundred young men join them. In their first battle, Zhang Fei kills the rebel champion and Guan Yu kills his companion, and the rebels run. At Qingzhou the rebels are too many, so Xuande plans an ambush. His main force pretends to retreat while his brothers hide on both sides of a mountain pass. When the rebels chase, the hidden soldiers charge, and the city is saved. The book shows men held together by an oath, not by rank.

Dong Zhuo Seizes the Court

Xuande's old teacher, Lu Zhi, refuses to bribe a corrupt official, who reports him falsely, and he is arrested. The warlord Dong Zhuo takes his place. When the three brothers save Dong Zhuo in battle, he rudely sends them away because they hold no rank. Xuande (Liu Bei) finally receives a small county post. He loses it after Zhang Fei beats a corrupt inspector.

Then Emperor Ling dies, and a fight begins over who will rule. General He Jin, the empress's brother, ignores the young officer Cao Cao's advice and calls in outside armies, including Dong Zhuo's. The eunuchs trick He Jin into the palace and kill him. Soldiers storm the palace, it burns, and Dong Zhuo arrives to take control. He wins over the great fighter Lü Bu with gifts, including the horse Red Hare. Lü Bu kills his own master, Ding Yuan, to join him.

Dong Zhuo then removes the fifteen-year-old Emperor Shao and puts the boy's nine-year-old brother on the throne as Emperor Xian. The removed boy, his mother and his wife are murdered.

Cao Cao tries to stab Dong Zhuo with a dagger lent by the minister Wang Yun. He fails and flees. Chen Gong, a magistrate who catches him, frees him and joins him. Staying with a family friend, Lü Boshe, the two wrongly think they are being betrayed. They kill eight innocent people, and Cao Cao then kills Lü Boshe too, so that he cannot raise the alarm. Cao Cao says he would rather beat the world than let it beat him. Shocked, Chen Gong leaves him.

Coalition, Ruin and Revenge

Cao Cao uses a false imperial order to gather troops and calls on others to oppose Dong Zhuo. Seventeen leaders join under Yuan Shao, and Xuande (Liu Bei) and his brothers fight with them. The alliance is weak. Yuan Shao's brother Yuan Shu, in charge of supplies, withholds food from Sun Jian, and Sun Jian loses a battle. Then Dong Zhuo's champion Hua Xiong kills two warriors, and Guan Yu rides out. He returns with Hua Xiong's head before a cup of warmed wine has cooled.

Dong Zhuo answers by moving the capital to Chang'an and burning Luoyang. The allies find only ruins, and their alliance falls apart. Sun Jian finds the jade seal of the emperors in a well and tries to take it south in secret. Liu Biao's men trap him. Later Sun Jian dies at thirty-seven, hit by a stone in another ambush.

In Chang'an the minister Wang Yun uses his singing girl, Diao Chan, to split Dong Zhuo from his adopted son Lü Bu. He promises her to Lü Bu, then gives her to Dong Zhuo. Lü Bu joins Wang Yun's plot and kills Dong Zhuo at the palace. But Dong Zhuo's old generals, Li Jue and Guo Si, seize the capital and kill Wang Yun.

Cao Cao, meanwhile, defeats rebels and builds power at Yanzhou. Guards sent by Tao Qian, the governor of Xuzhou, murder Cao Cao's family for their wagons. Cao Cao blames Tao Qian and invades. His army massacres civilians. The novel shows how power taken by force keeps producing revenge.
