What is The Courage to Be Disliked about?
Over five nights, a philosopher and a doubting young man debate whether a person can change and be happy now, using the individual psychology of Alfred Adler. The philosopher replaces the search for past causes with the question of what goal a feeling or behavior serves, and argues that all problems are interpersonal, drawing on ideas such as the inferiority complex, the separation of tasks, horizontal relationships without praise or rebuke, and community feeling. It ends with self-acceptance, confidence in others, contribution, and living each moment earnestly in the here and now.

A Philosopher and a Doubting Youth
The Courage to Be Disliked asks one question: how can a person be happy? Its authors, Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga, build their answer from the ideas of the psychologist Alfred Adler. They place him beside Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung as a giant of psychology. Instead of a plain explanation, they write a conversation between a philosopher and a young man, called the youth in this summary. The book gives neither of them a name.
The story begins on the edge of an old city. A philosopher lives there who teaches that the world is simple and that anyone can be happy, right now. The youth is unhappy with his life. To him the world is a confusing mess full of contradictions, and the idea of happiness makes no sense. He has come to debate the philosopher and, if possible, to prove him wrong.
The youth explains why he thinks life is not simple. A child may find the world easy, but only because parents and society protect him. A grown person gets duties, tangled relationships, and a clear view of problems such as war and inequality. Religion no longer gives people something to lean on, he says, so everyone feels anxious and lives only for themselves. The philosopher hears all of this and keeps his position: both the world and life are simple.
The Well Water Example
The philosopher's reply is that the world is not complicated. The youth is the one making it complicated. Nobody, the philosopher explains, lives in an objective world, one that looks the same to everyone. Each person lives in a subjective world, a world that he or she has given meaning to. So the philosopher's world and the youth's world are different, and no one can share his own world with another person.
To show this, the philosopher asks about well water. Water drawn from a well stays at about sixty degrees all year. That number is objective: a thermometer gives the same reading to everyone. Yet in summer the water feels cool, and in winter the same water feels warm. The youth first calls this an illusion, a trick of the senses. The philosopher disagrees. For the person drinking, the coolness or warmth at that moment is a real fact. Every person lives inside a world like this, and nobody can escape it.
The lesson, for the philosopher, is about the youth, not about the world. The world seems confusing and mysterious because of how the youth is. If he changes, the world will seem simpler.
Courage and Change
Next the philosopher uses the picture of dark glasses. Seen through dark glasses, the whole world looks dark. The youth could complain about the darkness, or he could simply take the glasses off. Then the world might look so bright that he closes his eyes and wants the glasses back. So the real question, the philosopher says, is whether the youth dares to look straight at the world. It is a matter of courage.
Then the two state their positions. The philosopher says that people can change and that everyone can be happy, with no exceptions. The youth says people cannot change. He adds that he himself suffers because he cannot change, and that he would love to start his life again. He is searching for the truth about life, he says, and he warns that the philosopher may be the one who loses the debate.
The philosopher says he has never taken students of his own. But after studying Greek philosophy, he met "another philosophy," and since then he has waited a long time for a young visitor like this one. He promises not to run away or hide anything, and he sends the youth into his study. It will be a long night.
