Murphy's Big Idea About Your Mind
Arthur R. Pell, the editor, built this book mainly from the teachings of Joseph Murphy and added modern examples. Murphy's core teaching is about the subconscious mind. He believes your mind works on two levels. The conscious mind is the part that thinks, reasons and chooses. The subconscious mind is the deeper part that stores your memories and beliefs and quietly guides how you act. Murphy teaches that whatever the conscious mind accepts as true, especially when you think it again and again, sinks into the subconscious. The subconscious then works to bring it about.
Murphy compares your thoughts to seeds and the subconscious to soil. Soil grows whatever is planted. In the same way, he says, the subconscious does not check whether a thought is true. It accepts it and acts on it. Results may take days, weeks or longer. So, in his view, you train your subconscious by choosing the thoughts you plant.
For your career, Murphy says this means you are not trapped by a strict boss, office rules or bad luck. Fear of a boss or a rival holds you back only if you allow it.
Pell gives one example. Jules H. was a young lawyer at a big firm, with a dozen equally able rivals. Most of them complained about long hours of dull routine work. Jules felt the same frustration, but he told himself this work was the price of moving ahead, and gave it full effort. Soon his bosses noticed and gave him more important cases.
Guard the Door of Your Mind
Murphy says your conscious mind is like a guard at a gate. Its job is to check what enters the subconscious. The subconscious does not compare or argue, he teaches. It takes what you say at face value. Tell yourself again and again, "I can't get that promotion," and it will help make that true. So Murphy urges you to give it only thoughts that build you up.
Suggestions also come from other people. Parents, teachers, bosses and friends may have said things like "You'll never amount to anything" or "You're too old now." Murphy says your conscious mind can reject any negative suggestion. You are not another person's puppet, he says.
He offers a few simple steps. Notice the phrases you repeat to yourself. If a problem holds you back at work, ask: What am I avoiding? Am I hiding anger toward someone? Then face it. Before sleep, he suggests reading something uplifting, or praying. If worry or stress feels too heavy, a doctor or counselor can also help.
Murphy was a minister, but Pell says you need no creed to use these ideas. The main lesson is ownership: do your own thinking. A belief held for a long time becomes part of how you live, so Pell urges you to replace negative beliefs with positive ones.
