What is The 50th Law about?

The 50th Law asks how fear shrinks what people dare to do, and argues that the one thing we can always control is the attitude we bring to events. Robert Greene and 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson) take ten fearless principles, such as intense realism, self-reliance, opportunism, calculated momentum, aggression, authority, connection, mastery, self-belief and facing mortality, and illustrate each with episodes from 50 Cent's rise from Southside Queens and with historical figures like Lincoln, Napoleon, Frederick Douglass and Seneca. The summary also notes where the authors give no test for when tactics such as deception or aggression are fair, and that the street stories are biography, not a model to follow.

How the Book Began

Robert Greene opens the book in his own voice. He met 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson) in the winter of 2006. 50 Cent had read Greene's earlier book, The 48 Laws of Power, and wanted to work with him on a book.

The two men came from very different worlds, yet Greene says they saw people in the same way. When someone gave a kind reason for what they did, both men asked what the person was really after. 50 Cent learned this habit on the dangerous streets of Southside Queens. Greene learned it by reading history and by watching people play clever games to get ahead in Hollywood.

Greene says Americans tend to stay in their own circles. So he liked the idea of joining their two worlds to find truths about human nature that hold for everyone.

Through much of 2007, Greene followed 50 Cent with almost full access. He saw two employees fight in the office, and 50 Cent broke it up himself. He watched 50 Cent stage a fake crisis to win press attention. He also visited 50 Cent's childhood home and met friends from his days of hustling, which in this book means selling drugs on the street. The more Greene saw, the more 50 Cent reminded him of the powerful people from history he had written about.

Fearlessness as the Source of His Power

Greene has a theory about powerful people. He believes the success of each one can usually be traced to a single quality. For Napoleon, it was the ability to take in huge amounts of detail and keep it organized in his mind.

After watching 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson) and hearing about his past, Greene decided that 50 Cent's quality is fearlessness. He says it is not loud. When 50 Cent shouts or threatens in public, Greene calls it theater, a show put on for effect. In private, he is calm and careful. He will walk away from a deal he does not like. Greene says 50 Cent has survived so many dangers on the street that business does not frighten him. Because he never expected to live past twenty-five, he feels he has nothing to lose. Greene sees this as his edge in a world where most people are timid.

Hoping it could help him with his own fears, Greene made fearlessness the subject of the book. The ten chapters grew out of patterns he noticed in 50 Cent. The two men shaped the themes together, such as facing death, welcoming change and turning hardship into strength. Greene then added research on people in history with the same quality.

The book's main belief is simple. Your fears are like a prison that limits what you can do. In Greene's view, letting go of fear brings you more power and a fuller life.
