What is Thick Face, Black Heart: The Warrior Philosophy for Conquering the Challenges of Business and Life about?

Chin-Ning Chu asks why decent, hard-working people so often get used, shamed or overlooked, and answers with Thick Face, Black Heart: a shield against other people's opinions and a spear of unhesitating action toward a right goal, which she insists is ruthless but not necessarily evil. Drawing on Lee Zhong Wu's banned Thick Black Theory, Chinese strategy tales such as playing the pig to eat the tiger, the Hindu idea of Dharma, and her own business stories, she covers unlearning the need for approval, enduring failure, deception without deceit, the killer instinct, and leading and negotiating among the cunning. She presents the strength as already present in everyone, uncovered through seven stages, detachment and a calm mind rather than learned as a set of tricks.

Two Suitcases and Two Books

In 1949, Chin-Ning Chu was three years old. She held on to her mother's skirt and ran with her parents and two younger brothers across an airport runway in Shanghai while bombs went off nearby. They boarded the last passenger flight out of China. A family that had lived in comfort became one more refugee family among the millions who had fled to Taiwan.

In 1969, at twenty-two, Chu left Taiwan for Los Angeles. She arrived as a stranger again, with two suitcases. Inside were clothes she had sewn herself, a few small belongings, and two books. Of all her books, she chose only these: Sun Tzu's Art of War, and a thin black book called Thick Black Theory by Lee Zhong Wu.

Chu cannot say exactly why she packed Lee's book. It is a difficult book. Lee's writing is unclear, and he jumps between ideas so fast that she often got lost. Even so, she sensed something deep in it. For twenty years she kept coming back to it, and she says it changed how she sees everything that has happened in her life.

From Lee's Riddles to Chu's Book

Lee Zhong Wu first published his ideas in 1911, the year the last imperial dynasty fell in China. Chu says his book has never been translated or published outside China, and that even inside China it was banned almost from the start, because Lee spoke so openly about ruthlessness and hypocrisy. A Chinese writer can pack a whole story into a phrase of three or four characters, and the reader needs the history behind it. Lee also writes in short, unconnected sayings.

So Chu does not simply translate him. She takes his blunt view of how the world works and gives it a name: Thick Face, Black Heart. The name is an idiom, not to be read word for word. Roughly, "thick face" means other people's opinions and attempts to shame you cannot shake you. "Black heart" means you act without hesitation toward your goal, even when it is hard on others. It does not mean evil. Chapter 1 explains both properly.

Lee thought three years of study would be enough. Chu spent twenty. She found two levels. The shallow one is a set of methods for getting what you want by pressing your will on other people. The deeper one treats Thick Face, Black Heart as the natural, proper state of your soul.

Chu grew up in a Chinese culture shaped by Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, even though she was Catholic. She later studied Hindu scriptures and Christian mystics, and spent a long time meditating on an Oregon mountain. She came to believe that all these traditions share one central principle. In her view, Lee's gift was to describe that principle in plain, everyday terms. The ideas in this book, she adds, are her own; Lee gave her a starting point, not a text to explain.
