What is The Four Agreements about?

Don Miguel Ruiz asks why people suffer under beliefs they never chose, and answers from Toltec-inspired teaching: children are "domesticated" into a shared "dream of the planet", then judge themselves with an inner Judge and Victim. He offers four new agreements as replacements for fear-based ones: be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions, and always do your best. The book adds stories, a path of awareness and forgiveness for breaking old agreements, and a closing vision of a fear-free "new dream".

Free preview: Introduction: The Smokey Mirror

A Dream of Light and Stars

Don Miguel Ruiz opens his book with a short story set about three thousand years ago, near a city surrounded by mountains. A young man there was training to become a medicine man, a healer who learns what his ancestors knew. He doubted parts of this teaching and sensed that there was more to find.

One night, while he slept in a cave, a dream let him watch himself asleep. He then walked out under a clear, new-moon sky. Looking at the stars, he felt a change inside him. In Ruiz's story, the man knew then that his body was made of light and of stars. He also saw that light makes the stars, not the other way round.

Next he saw that he was not the stars themselves. He was the space between them. His name for the stars was the tonal, and his name for the light in between was the nagual. He called the force that keeps the two in harmony Life or Intent. In this story, everything that exists is one living being, and the man called that being God.

Everyone Is a Mirror

In Ruiz's opening story, the man with the vision saw that human sight is only light looking at light. The real self, he said, is "pure love, pure light." He saw himself in people, animals, trees, water, clouds and earth. Life, he thought, mixes the tonal and the nagual in many ways to make billions of living forms.

He felt deep peace and wanted to share it, but he had no words for it. His people saw that he had changed and no longer judged anyone. They said he was God in human form. He agreed, and then added that they were God too. Still, they did not understand him.

The man explained this with a picture. Everyone is a mirror, and in each mirror he could see himself. But a wall of smoke stands between the mirrors, so people cannot see that they are the same. That smoke is the Dream: the way people interpret what they see. Afraid he would forget all this, he called himself the Smokey Mirror. The mirror, he said, is each person, the dreamer, and the smoke is the Dream.
