The Power of Now — Book Summary
សង្ខេបសៀវភៅ «អំណាចនៃការរស់នៅក្នុងពេលបច្ចុប្បន្ន»
What is The Power of Now about?
Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now asks why people suffer inside their own heads, and argues that the cause is identifying with the thinking mind and living in remembered past and imagined future. In a question-and-answer format, he teaches watching the thinker, feeling the inner body, noticing the stored emotional pain he calls the pain-body, and surrendering to the present moment instead of resisting it. The guide also covers his distinction between clock time and psychological time, his view of addictive love versus enlightened relationships, and his spiritual claims, which he presents as his own teaching.

The Night of Dread
Eckhart Tolle says he rarely thinks about the past, but he wants to explain how he became a spiritual teacher. Until about the age of thirty, he lived in almost constant anxiety, with periods of suicidal depression. Today that life feels to him like someone else's.
One night, not long after his twenty-ninth birthday, he woke in the early hours with a dread stronger than ever before. The dark room and the far-off sound of a train all felt hostile and meaningless. Worst of all was his own existence. A longing to stop existing had grown stronger than his wish to live.
Then he noticed a thought that kept repeating: "I cannot live with myself any longer." He saw that it suggests two selves: the "I" and the self that the "I" cannot bear. Perhaps, he thought, only one of them was real. The idea stunned him so much that his thinking stopped.
A New World and a Slow Understanding
With his mind silent, Tolle says, he felt pulled into a swirl of energy and was gripped by fear. He heard the words "resist nothing" as if spoken inside his chest. Then the fear ended, and he let himself fall into an emptiness that seemed to be inside him. He remembers nothing after that.
He woke to a bird singing. The first light through the curtains seemed to him to be love itself, and the room looked fresh, as if it had just come into being. For five months he lived in unbroken peace and joy. After that it grew less intense, or perhaps it simply became his normal state.
Only years later, after reading spiritual books and spending time with teachers, did he form an explanation. He believes the pressure of suffering forced his awareness to pull away from the unhappy, frightened self, which he calls a false self made by the mind. That self collapsed, he says, and what remained was pure consciousness. Tolle presents this as his own understanding. For a time he had no job, home or relationships, and he spent almost two years sitting on park benches in intense joy.
How Tolle Wants the Book Read
People later asked Tolle how they could have what he had. He told them they already had it but could not feel it because their minds were too noisy. That answer grew into this book.
Tolle says the book gathers ten years of work with seekers in Europe and North America. It keeps the question-and-answer form of his seminars, meditation classes and counseling. Some answers he wrote down almost word for word. Others combine many similar questions, and the editor added some questions.
The book works on two levels. On one, Tolle points out what is false in people. He says lasting change needs a person to see the false as not who they are, and he warns against making it into a personal problem, because that keeps it alive. On the other level, he describes a deep change in consciousness that he says anyone can reach now. Some passages aim to draw readers into the present moment and may seem repetitive until they are felt.
He asks readers not to read with the mind alone but to notice a feeling of recognition. He asks them not to compare his terms with other teachings, since he uses words in his own way, and to treat words as stepping stones. In his view, there has only ever been one spiritual teaching, in many forms.
