What is Die with Zero about?

Bill Perkins asks why people spend decades earning and saving money they will never use, and argues that the real goal of money is a lifetime of memorable experiences, not a larger balance. He builds his case on ideas such as life energy, the memory dividend, experience points on a fulfillment curve, and the fact that people's ability to enjoy money falls with age, then turns them into rules: estimate your lifespan, give to children and charity while you are alive, group wishes into time buckets, and aim for a net worth peak between about 45 and 60. Examples from his own life and those of friends, such as a loan-shark-funded Europe trip and a hedge-fund founder whose target kept moving, show both the cost of waiting and the limits of the advice.

The ant who never plays

Bill Perkins opens his book with Aesop’s fable of the Ant and the Grasshopper. The ant works all summer and stores food, so it survives the winter. The grasshopper plays all summer and starves when the cold comes. The usual lesson is that life has room for both work and play, each at its own time.

Perkins asks a different question: at what point does the ant get any fun? Everyone has to stay alive, he says, but people want far more than that. They want a full life. So his book is about thriving, not just surviving. It is about making your life grow, not your money.

Who this book is for

Perkins signed this note in the summer of 2019. He says he has thought about these ideas for years. He does not claim to have every answer. He also says he is not a certified financial planner. He only wants to live fully and hopes readers can too.

He is open about the limits of his message. Not everyone can live this way. A person who struggles to pay for basic needs may get some value from the book, but much less than a person who has the money, the health, and the spare time to really choose how to use them. His hope is modest: that readers will rethink some basic assumptions about life.
