What is The Total Money Makeover Workbook about?
Dave Ramsey's workbook asks readers to test how they really feel about money, face denial, debt myths and keeping up with the Joneses, and accept that change costs short-term sacrifice. It then walks through seven Baby Steps in a fixed order, from a $1,000 starter fund, the debt snowball and a full emergency fund to 15 percent retirement investing, college saving, paying off the home mortgage and building wealth. Its self-check exercises, cash-envelope budgeting and case stories such as Sara and John and Bob and Sara are set in the United States, and the final chapters turn to giving and the risk of loving wealth.

Who a Money Makeover Is For
Dave Ramsey opens the workbook with a memory. In his twenties, he faced the end of every month with dread. He says he was not afraid of hard work and did not need a secret formula for making money. He was simply sick and tired of the stress each time the bills came. Money came in and went out, with nothing to show for it.
Ramsey says how a person feels about money shows how much control that person has. Someone who likes his or her finances probably does not need a Total Money Makeover, and someone who feels lousy about them does. The Ten Situations Test checks this. The reader reacts quickly to ten moments, such as a friend asking about investments or a loan officer asking about finances, and marks each as something he or she likes or hates to talk about. Ramsey says financially fit people usually enjoy talking about money.
Scared or Smiling asks the reader to rate eleven money matters, such as paying bills or handling an emergency cost, from 1 (Scared) to 4 (Smiling All the Way). In Ramsey's reading, Scared or A Little Worried means the reader is not in control. Under Control may be true, or it may be denial. Smiling on most items probably means no makeover is needed. The scale is not scored, so these readings are Ramsey's own judgment.
Owning the Problem First
Ramsey says that in his late twenties, he and his wife went broke because of his own stupidity in handling money. He then learned three lessons. First, it was up to him, because nobody made him poor. Second, what he calls "God's and Grandma's way" of handling money works: building wealth is simple, and "spend less and invest more" is a five-word plan. Third, he claims that winning at money is 80 percent behavior and 20 percent head knowledge. Like eating less and exercising more, the ideas are easy, but they work only when a person acts.
In the exercise Whose Fault Is It?, Ramsey says that anyone who calls money problems "not my fault" or "only partly my fault" needs a reality check. The reader then lists who or what gets the blame, such as a spouse, bad luck, interest rates or the government, and writes down his or her own part in each. Ramsey says he is tough on this point for two reasons. A person who waits for others to take responsibility will do nothing to change. And the way a person allowed others to affect his or her money gives clues about what to undo.
Ramsey compares this to a person who blames ice cream and Mexican food for weight gain. The weakness is the person's own, he says, and the same is true of money: blaming another person or situation is denial. The next exercise, The Person in Your Mirror, lists eight statements, such as knowing what to do with money but not doing it. Ramsey says that marking any of them shows a makeover is needed.
The Motto and the Cost of Change
The whole workbook rests on one motto. If a person will live like no one else now, later that person can live like no one else. Ramsey explains that living like no one else now means a sacrificial, focused and purposeful life with money. Living like no one else later means life without the worry, stress and fear of always being near financial disaster.
Ramsey does not hide the cost. He cites a 2016 survey by the research company Mintel, in which 43 percent of Americans said modern life makes it much harder to be healthy, and 80 percent agreed that being healthy takes sacrifices. Many people want to change but do not, and in Ramsey's view the main reason is that they dislike change. He agrees that real change always involves sacrifice, self-denial and some pain.
The exercise The Willingness to Change sets eight pairs of opposite statements, such as liking or hating change, or preferring the pain of change to the pain of money problems. Ramsey tells readers who will not accept short-term pain to stop reading and return when their money problems become unbearable. He says a makeover works only as far as the reader is willing to change. The last exercise, Taking Charge, has the reader complete seven sentences about taking responsibility and read them aloud.
