What is The Ascent of Money about?
Niall Ferguson asks how money, credit and debt shaped world history, and why finance keeps advancing yet keeps ending in crises like the 2007 credit crash. He tells the story through the institutions that carried it forward, from banks and bond markets to joint-stock companies, insurance, pensions, mortgages and global capital flows, using cases such as the Medici bank, Rothschild's Waterloo bet, John Law's Mississippi Bubble and Long-Term Capital Management. He closes by explaining the uneven climb through uncertainty, human bias and an evolutionary view of finance.

Why Ferguson Defends Money
In 2007 the average American earned just under $34,000, only 0.9 per cent more than the year before once rising prices are counted. In the same year Lloyd Blankfein, head of the investment bank Goldman Sachs, received $68.5 million, roughly two thousand times the average pay.
Ferguson gives three reasons why people have long distrusted bankers and lenders. Borrowers usually outnumber lenders and rarely like them. Frequent crises and scandals make finance look like a cause of poverty and instability. And for centuries, in his account, much lending was done by ethnic or religious minorities, barred from owning land or holding office, who succeeded through close networks of family and trust.
Even so, Ferguson argues that money lies behind most progress. Borrowing a phrase from Jacob Bronowski, he says the ascent of money has been needed for the ascent of man. In his view, credit and debt mattered as much as any new technology in the rise of civilization. He promises to reveal the "financial secret" behind great events, such as the Medici bankers' use of Eastern mathematics, or Nathan Rothschild's part in Napoleon's defeat.
A Giant Industry and a Warning
By 2006 finance had grown enormous. World output was about $47 trillion, but stock markets were worth $51 trillion and bonds $68 trillion. Derivatives, contracts whose value depends on something else such as an interest rate or a debt, reached $473 trillion. In Ferguson's view, finance was starting to tower over the real economy.
Finance also took a bigger share of American output: 2.3 per cent in 1947, but 7.7 per cent by 2005. About $1 of every $13 paid to US employees went to people working in finance.
From late 2001 to mid 2007 markets grew strongly, even after the 9/11 attacks. Enthusiasts said new financial tools had made markets more efficient and moved risk to those best able to carry it. Ferguson disagreed. In November 2006, speaking to bankers at Lyford Cay in the Bahamas, he warned that the flood of easy money could quickly dry up. The audience dismissed him as an alarmist. One investor even suggested that next year the organizers drop the outside speaker and show the film Mary Poppins instead.
From Mary Poppins to the 2007 Crisis
The Mary Poppins joke reminded Ferguson of the film's plot. A small boy demands his pocket money back at his father's bank. Other customers overhear and rush to take out their own savings, until the bank has to stop paying. That is a bank run: many depositors trying to withdraw cash at once. In September 2007 real customers queued outside Northern Rock, an English bank, after it asked the Bank of England for emergency help.
Ferguson says the economic trouble of 2008 came from finance, not from worse products or slower invention. It started with subprime mortgages, home loans to relatively poor families. Banks bundled these loans, repackaged them as securities and sold them to buyers as far away as German regional banks and Norwegian local authorities. Some slices even won the top triple-A rating, the mark of the safest debt. When the low "teaser" rates ended after one or two years, many borrowers stopped paying. House prices fell faster than at any time since the 1930s, and banks took heavy losses.
Ferguson also stresses bank capital: a bank's own money standing behind its loans. By May 2008 US banks had admitted to $255 billion of losses. If the real losses proved much bigger, Ferguson warns, credit might have to shrink by perhaps ten times that amount, to match banks' smaller capital.
Why Learn This? Three Insights
Ferguson says many ordinary people know very little about money. In a 2007 survey, four in ten American credit card holders did not pay off their main card in full each month, and 29 per cent had no idea what interest rate it charged. A 2008 survey found that compound interest, where interest builds on earlier interest, was not understood by two thirds of Americans. Ferguson argues that a society which leaves people to run their own savings, homes and pensions is heading for trouble if they lack this knowledge.
Ferguson draws three lessons. First, poverty has more to do with missing banks than with greedy bankers. Good credit lets borrowers escape loan sharks, and reliable banks carry savers' money to people who will put it to work. Second, finance magnifies human nature. It makes people swing harder between excitement and gloom, and it rewards the lucky and the smart while punishing those who do not understand money. Third, financial crises are very hard to predict, because the system is so complex. Ferguson compares financial history to evolution on a much faster clock, in which some new methods survive and others die out.
