What is Your Money or Your Life about?
This 2018 edition of Your Money or Your Life asks what money really costs, answering that it is the hours of life a person trades to earn it. Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez teach a nine-step program in which readers total lifetime earnings and net worth, calculate a real hourly wage, track every cent, judge each spending category with three questions about fulfillment, values and purpose, and chart income against expenses. The book builds on the fulfillment curve and the idea of enough, then follows savings toward a Crossover Point where investment income covers expenses, with chapters on frugality, redefining work, income-producing investments and Money Talks.

Where the book comes from
Your Money or Your Life teaches a nine-step program. In her introduction to the 2018 edition, Vicki Robin says its purpose is to change a person's relationship with money and reach Financial Independence. At the most basic level, that means no longer having to work for money, so that time is free for more happiness, freedom and meaning.
The program began with Joe Dominguez. He grew up poor in Spanish Harlem in New York City and found a job on Wall Street and saved with one goal: to retire by thirty. Robin joined him in the 1970s, and they taught and wrote together for nearly two decades. Dominguez died in early 1997. Robin admits that their dream of changing how Americans think about money "had not really panned out," despite hundreds of thousands of grateful readers.
Years later, a meeting with people worried about money, including a college student already $20,000 in debt, moved Robin to update the book. She says everyone, whatever their job, is now in the YOYO class: You're On Your Own. The core of the program, she adds, is unchanged.
What enough means
Robin says the program does not promise more money or less money. It promises that a person can learn how much is enough for a life they love. She calls enough the book's radical promise, because the wish for more never ends. To help readers find their own answer, she asks questions such as: If you had $1 million right now, what would you do with your time?
Robin says the Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman found that above about $75,000 a year, in the United States at the time of writing, more money does not buy more happiness. She also describes the seminars she and Dominguez ran in the 1980s. Almost everyone, in every income group, said they would need 50 percent more money to be happy. Yet happiness ratings showed no significant difference between top and bottom earners. These numbers came from seminar audiences, not from a formal study. Robin concludes that a clear, conscious relationship with money matters more than a "number," a dollar goal chosen without a real reason.
The four FIs
Robin says the program teaches FI thinking: staying aware of, and curious about, the flow of money through one's life. Doing the steps, she says, leads to four FIs.
Financial Intelligence (FI1) is the ability to step back and look at one's own beliefs and feelings about money. It starts with knowing how much has been earned and how much comes in and goes out. One practical result is being out of debt with at least six months of basic living costs saved. Financial Integrity (FI2) is knowing the true effect of one's earning and spending on family and planet, knowing what is enough, and living by one's values.
Financial Independence (FI3) is wider than a secure income. It is freedom from anything that makes a person depend on money to handle life, including harmful beliefs and crippling debt. Financial Interdependence (FI4) is the understanding that independence means leaving dead-end routines, not leaving other people. Robin says most people, once free and rested, want to help make the world better.
What is new and how to read
Robin says the 2018 edition has thousands of small changes, and two chapters were heavily revised. Chapter 6 was updated for smartphones and online shopping. Chapter 9 was rebuilt, because the investment method that served Dominguez and others well for twenty-five years is, Robin says, no longer the only or best way. It now shows several strategies used in the FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early). A new tool called Money Talks, explained in the epilogue, helps people talk about money with others.
Robin also says people move at different speeds, from slow turtles to fast hares. The key is to start and keep going, though she admits that upbringing, race and gender make the start much harder for some. Her advice is to read the whole book first and then return to chapter 1.
