What is Just Keep Buying: Proven Ways to Save Money and Build Your Wealth about?
Nick Maggiulli asks how ordinary people should save, spend, borrow and invest across a working life, and answers with historical data on U.S. stocks, bonds, housing and cash instead of slogans. His central rule, "Just Keep Buying" income-producing assets, rests on tests showing that investing now and often usually beats waiting for a dip, alongside ideas such as the Save-Invest continuum, the 2x Rule for guilt-free spending and saving half of every raise. He also weighs debt, renting versus buying, cash versus bonds for big goals, the 4% rule, rebalancing, retirement-account taxes and the role of luck and time.

A grandfather who gambled it all
Nick Maggiulli opens the book with a story about his late grandfather, who was addicted to gambling. He bet on horse races, then on card games, at $25 to $75 a hand. The grandfather retired at 55 with a pension of $1,000 a month. Seven years later, Social Security, the U.S. government pension, added $1,200 a month. His own mother paid for his food and housing, so he had almost no costs. Even so, he gambled everything away over a 26-year retirement and died in May 2019 with no assets.
What if the grandfather had invested half of that monthly income in U.S. stocks instead? Maggiulli says he would have died a millionaire, even though a large part of the money would have gone in during 2000–2009, one of the worst decades for U.S. stocks. He shows no calculation, so this is an illustration, not proof. His point is that buying month after month can make up for even very bad money habits. He sums up the idea in three words: "Just. Keep. Buying."
Where the three words came from
Maggiulli borrowed the phrase from a YouTube video by Casey Neistat. Neistat said his channel grew thanks to advice from another YouTuber, Roman Atwood: keep uploading. A few weeks before seeing it, Maggiulli's own study of U.S. stock data had shown him something surprising. To build wealth, it did not matter whether stocks looked cheap or expensive, or whether the market was rising or falling. What mattered was to buy and keep buying.
By Just Keep Buying, Maggiulli means regularly buying a mix of income-producing assets, such as stocks, bonds and real estate: assets expected to earn income far into the future. The formal name is dollar-cost averaging, which means buying an asset at regular times. He says this is much cheaper today than in the 1990s, when each trade cost $8. Many platforms now offer free trading and fractional shares (parts of one share). One share of an S&P 500 index fund, a fund that buys the 500 large U.S. companies in that index, gives you a small stake in all of them.
The book uses data to answer common money questions, sometimes against usual advice. Its two parts cover saving and investing.
