What is I Will Teach You to Be Rich about?

Ramit Sethi's 2009 book asks why so many young people in the United States put off managing and investing their money, and argues that a simple automatic system matters more than expert advice or endless debate over details. His six-week plan runs from credit cards and no-fee bank accounts through 401(k) and Roth IRA accounts, a Conscious Spending Plan with four buckets, and automatic transfers into low-cost index or lifecycle funds. Its distinctive ideas include the 85 Percent Solution, the Ladder of Personal Finance and the Automatic Money Flow, and the later chapters apply the same thinking to talking about money with parents or a partner, negotiating a salary, buying a car, weddings and houses.

Why People Debate Instead of Act

Ramit Sethi wrote this book in 2009, after the 2008 financial crisis, with young people in the United States in mind. He begins with weight loss. Many people gain weight after college, he says, yet almost everyone needs to know only two things: eat less and exercise more. Instead, friends argue about carbs and diet pills. People love to debate small details.

Money works the same way, Sethi argues. Most people either ignore their money and feel guilty, or argue about interest rates without doing anything. The debate feels like progress, but it is the easiest way to get nothing done. In his view, most young people do not need a financial adviser. They need a no-fee bank, automatic saving and bill payment, a few simple investments, and about thirty years for the money to grow.

A reader, Joey Schoblaska, 22, kept finding reasons not to open an investment account. He told himself that he did not know the difference between two kinds of IRA (a personal retirement account), that there would be paperwork, and that he might pick the wrong funds. Sethi adds that too much information can cause decision paralysis: doing nothing because there are too many choices. He quotes Barry Schwartz: for every 10 funds added to a company's 401(k) retirement plan, the share of workers who take part drops 2 percent.

Start Early and Aim for 85 Percent

Sethi calls starting early the most important step to being rich. In his example, two people each invest $100 a month. Smart Sally invests from age twenty-five to thirty-five and then never touches the money. Dumb Dan invests from thirty-five to sixty-five, three times as long. Yet Sethi says Sally ends with about $80,000 more. The exact gap depends on the yearly growth rate used in the book's table.

Sethi also answers common excuses. Banks do try to profit from customers, he says, so people should learn the banks' methods and use them to their own advantage. Fear of losing money is fair, but money left in a bank loses value to inflation (rising prices), so he asks for a long-term view. In the 2008 crash, he says, many people made things worse by selling after prices fell.

His main message is the 85 Percent Solution: acting and getting things 85 percent right is far better than doing nothing. Early mistakes, made with little money, are cheap lessons. Sethi put his first scholarship, $2,000, into the stock market and quickly lost half of it. He adds that buying good funds and holding them is boring but wins over the long term.

Define Rich and Follow the Plan

Sethi calls his approach conscious spending: spending freely on what a person loves and cutting costs hard on what they do not care about. His friend Jim got a raise and, the same day, moved to a smaller apartment. Jim cares little about where he lives, but he loves spending on camping and biking.

Sethi always asks young people why they want to be rich. Most never think about it, he says, so they can easily end up trying to keep up with their friends. For Sethi, being rich means choosing his career for reasons other than money, helping his parents retire, and running a scholarship fund for young entrepreneurs, launched in May 2006. He urges readers to set their own goals before reading on.

He calls complex products such as hedge funds irrelevant for individual investors. His six-week plan follows. Week 1 covers credit cards. Week 2 covers bank accounts. Week 3 covers a 401(k) and an investment account, even with $50. Week 4 covers finding out where the money goes. Week 5 covers automating the accounts. Week 6 covers investing. There are no secrets, he says, only small steps and discipline.
