Access without surrendering judgment
Ashlee Vance begins with a problem that runs through his biography: how can a writer understand an unusually ambitious person without accepting that person's preferred story? Elon Musk initially declined to cooperate. Vance continued interviewing former employees, relatives and other people who had known him. When Musk eventually participated, Vance kept editorial control. Access brought detailed explanations of engineering and business decisions, but it did not make every recollection an established fact. People who worked together could disagree about motives, credit and what had happened in a crisis.
The opening portrait also depends on timing. By the period Vance describes, SpaceX had reached the International Space Station and Tesla had delivered a widely praised electric sedan. These achievements changed how people received Musk's promises. Ideas that had sounded implausible now attracted serious attention. Yet a successful rocket flight or car did not prove that every future ambition would work. Vance's central question concerns how the companies achieved difficult things, what other people contributed and what the effort cost. His book offers a reported interpretation, with admiration and criticism both present.
Choosing difficult physical problems
Musk's companies stood out in a technology industry where many new businesses focused on websites, advertising and small improvements to existing services. Rockets and cars required factories, materials, specialized workers, safety testing and large amounts of money. A software bug might be repaired after release; a failed launch could destroy a payload and threaten the company. These differences help explain why ambitious hardware projects met resistance even when their potential value seemed large.
Vance uses this contrast to ask whether technological ambition had narrowed. Some observers believed major innovation was slowing; others challenged the evidence or the definition of progress. Musk became a vivid example in that debate because he chose industries with expensive infrastructure and established competitors. His choices do not settle the broader argument. They show what it takes to attempt progress where a promising idea must survive manufacturing, regulation and customers' practical needs. The story therefore concerns organization as much as invention. A rocket design or electric motor needs a working business around it before it can change ordinary life.
Commitment with a cost
After earning substantial money from earlier internet companies, Musk committed much of it to new ventures. Vance reports investments of about $100 million in SpaceX, $70 million in Tesla and $10 million in SolarCity. These were consequential bets on products that could fail. Personal wealth on paper did not mean the businesses always had enough cash to pay bills, and Musk's willingness to invest did not remove the need for outside investors and public contracts.
The same intensity appeared in his schedule and expectations of employees. Supporters saw unusual commitment and an ability to push teams beyond accepted limits. Critics experienced unreasonable deadlines, harsh exchanges and little tolerance for personal needs. Both sides matter to the opening portrait. It would be too simple to turn the biography into a rule that difficult behavior produces innovation, or that conviction guarantees success. Vance follows a person whose drive helped organize remarkable work while also creating strain. The companies' achievements must be understood alongside the engineers, managers, investors and families who carried parts of that burden.
