What is The Enchiridion about?

The Enchiridion is a handbook of 52 short sections in which Epictetus asks how a person can stay free and calm when most of life, from health and property to other people's opinions, is not theirs to command. His approach is one sorting rule: separate what is in a person's control, meaning opinions, choices and wishes, from what is not, and judge every upsetting event by that test. He gives it concrete form through images such as life as a voyage, a dinner party and a play, practices like saying "I have returned it" instead of "I have lost it", and rules for speech, temptation, duty and daily conduct.

Sort what is yours from what is not

The Enchiridion is a collection of 52 short numbered sections of advice by Epictetus. It opens with one sorting rule. In section 1, Epictetus divides things into two kinds. Some things are in a person's control: their opinions, choices to act, wishes, dislikes and, in short, their own doing. Other things are not: the body, property, reputation and positions of power.

Epictetus says the first kind is free by nature and cannot be blocked. The second kind is weak and belongs to others. Treating it as one's own leads to frustration, complaint and blaming both gods and people. A person who claims only what is truly theirs, he promises, will never be forced or harmed. The promise depends on sorting correctly.

He also gives a test. An appearance is the way something first strikes the mind. Epictetus says to tell each harsh appearance, "You are but an appearance," then ask whether it is in a person's control. If not, it is nothing to them. Section 2 adds that dreading sickness, death or poverty makes a person miserable. Epictetus says to avoid only what goes against the right use of one's own choices. For now, he adds, a beginner should hold back desire completely, since wanting outside things brings disappointment.

Opinions, not events, disturb people

Sections 3 and 4 teach two small exercises. In section 3, Epictetus says to name the general kind of each thing a person loves. A favourite cup is just one of many ceramic cups, so its breaking need not upset its owner. Remembering that a child or wife is human helps a person stay calm if one of them dies. In section 4, he says to picture an activity before starting it. A public bath brings splashing, pushing, rude words and theft. Someone who goes to bathe and also to keep the mind in line with nature will not let these troubles spoil that second aim.

Section 5 gives the idea behind these exercises. What upsets people, Epictetus says, is not events but their opinions about events. Death is not terrible, he argues, or Socrates would have found it so. The terror lies in the opinion. So an upset person should blame their own opinions, not other people. Epictetus names three stages: an untrained person blames others, a beginner blames himself, and a fully trained person blames neither others nor himself.
