A book of sayings
The Analects is a record of what Confucius said and did. Most passages are short. Many begin "the Master said," and in this book "the Master" always means Confucius. His disciples speak of him as "our Master," and some passages give their own sayings, such as those of the Scholar Yu and the Scholar Tsang. Other passages are small scenes: a disciple asks a question, a ruler asks for advice, and the Master answers. The record is divided into twenty parts called Books. Each Book is a loose mix of sayings, not one long argument.
Book I starts with learning. The Master asks a simple question. If you learn something and then practise it at the right time, is that not satisfying? He adds that friends who come from far away to study with you bring pleasure too. At the end of the Book he says he is not troubled when people do not know him. His real worry is that he may not know them.
Check yourself and mend faults
Several sayings in this Book are about character. The Scholar Tsang says he examines himself every day on three points. Did he work whole-heartedly for others? Was he true to his friends? Did he practise what he taught? The Master gives a matching rule: when you go wrong, "be not afraid to correct yourself."
The Scholar Yu says that people who respect their parents and older brothers rarely turn against their superiors. He calls this family respect a root, from which right feeling toward all people grows. The Master adds that a serious person is respected and learns solidly, and that loyalty and sincerity come first. He warns that fine speech and a put-on look rarely go with real goodness.
The Master also describes a devoted student. Such a person does not crave a full meal or a comfortable home, works hard, is careful with words, and seeks out people of high principle. Tsz-kung asks about the poor who do not fawn and the rich who are not proud. The Master calls them acceptable, but ranks higher the poor who stay cheerful and the rich who love propriety, meaning proper conduct.
