What is The Problem of Pain about?

C. S. Lewis, writing as a lay Christian who admits he does not live up to his own principles, takes up the intellectual question of how a good and all-powerful God can exist alongside human and animal suffering. He answers step by step: omnipotence cannot do what is self-contradictory, free souls need a fixed shared world, God's love is sterner than mere kindness, and the Fall explains human wickedness, which pain then confronts as God's "megaphone", as a break in false self-sufficiency, and as a test of real obedience. The book goes on to defend the possibility of Hell, offers openly tentative guesses about animal pain, and closes with heaven as a city of unlike souls, each made for its own place.

An Admission Before the Argument

Ashley Sampson suggested that C. S. Lewis write this book. Lewis asked to publish it without his name. He feared that his brave-sounding words about pain would seem ridiculous once readers knew who wrote them. The series did not allow this, so Sampson proposed a preface in which Lewis admits that he does not live up to his own principles.

Lewis agrees. Quoting Walter Hilton, he confesses that he feels far from what he describes. Yet no one can say he takes pain lightly, because even imagining serious pain has always been unbearable to him. The book's only aim is to answer the intellectual problem that suffering raises, not to teach bravery or patience. For anyone bearing pain, Lewis believes courage helps more than knowledge, sympathy more than courage, and the love of God most of all.

A Layman Who Keeps to Old Teaching

Lewis calls himself a layman, not a trained theologian, and an amateur. Apart from the last two chapters, which he admits are partly guesswork, he believes he is only restating old, orthodox (long-accepted) Christian teaching. Anything new in the book got there against his will, through ignorance. He writes as a member of the Church of England, but tries to assume only what all baptised Christians who take communion believe. The book is not a work of scholarship, so he did not trace every source.
