What is From Third World to First: The Singapore Story 1965–2000 about?

Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first prime minister, explains how a small island with no natural resources survived after leaving Malaysia in 1965 and grew rich by 2000. He describes the choices behind it, including a citizens' army, welcoming multinational companies, home ownership paid from compulsory savings, strict anti-corruption laws, English as a common language and the search for talent, and he admits costs such as lawsuits against critics and tight control of the press. The second half shows how he dealt with Malaysia, Indonesia, China, the United States, Japan and others, and why he believed a small state survives only by being useful and keeping a balance of power.

Why Lee Wrote This Book

Lee Kuan Yew wrote this book for young Singaporeans who took peace, growth and wealth for granted. He wanted them to know how hard survival once was. Singapore is small, only 640 square kilometres, with no natural resources. Its larger, newly independent neighbours each put their own national interests first.

Lee says order, safety and prosperity do not happen naturally. They need ceaseless effort from an honest, effective government that the people must elect.

From Independence to First World

The Japanese occupation (1942–45) awoke Lee's nationalism. In 1959, aged 35, he became the first prime minister of self-governing Singapore. Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963 but had to leave in August 1965. The race riots and bullying of those years made Lee and his colleagues determined to build a multiracial society that treats every citizen equally. Lee calls this an article of faith that guided their policies.

Income per person rose from US$400 in 1959 to more than US$12,200 in 1990. Lee says this is not a how-to book. It tells what problems his team faced and how they tried to solve them.
