What is Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance about?

Angela Duckworth investigates why talent alone does not explain achievement sustained over many years. She defines grit as enduring passion and perseverance, then examines interest, deliberate practice, purpose, hope, parenting, teaching, and organizational culture as conditions that can help long-term effort develop without claiming that persistence solves every problem.

Free preview: Preface

Preface — 1

Angela Duckworth grew up hearing her father compare people by intelligence. His recurring judgment was that his children were not geniuses. Years later, when she received a MacArthur Fellowship, often called a genius grant, she saw an irony: her research concerned the contributions that sustained passion and perseverance make to achievement. The interesting question was no longer simply whether she possessed exceptional raw ability. It was how someone develops and uses whatever abilities they have over a long period.

Preface — 2

That shift is the learning promise of this book. By the end, you should be able to distinguish grit from a burst of effort; explain how practice builds skill and how further effort turns skill into accomplishment; organize a lasting goal without stubbornly preserving every tactic; develop interest, practice, purpose, and hope; and recognize the support and opportunities on which persistence depends. Duckworth's argument concerns an important part of achievement, not a complete explanation of anyone's life or a measure of their human worth.

Preface — 3

The personal opening also explains why the argument matters emotionally. A label about potential can become a premature verdict about a person. Duckworth wants readers to leave room for development. Her evidence includes predictive studies, experiments on particular learning processes, and interviews with accomplished people. These provide different kinds of support. A compelling life story can clarify how persistence works without proving that everyone who follows it will obtain the same result.
