What is The Little Book of Common Sense Investing about?
John C. Bogle argues that most investors are best served by owning a broad, low-cost index fund for a long time rather than repeatedly trying to outguess the market. He separates business returns from speculation, shows how fees and taxes compound against investors, and discusses diversification, asset allocation, and discipline while acknowledging that no market outcome is guaranteed.

The Argument and Its Evidence
Bogle begins with a question about ownership: if publicly traded businesses produce earnings and distribute dividends, how much of that return reaches their owners? His answer shifts attention away from finding the next exceptional manager and toward retaining the return businesses already create. A traditional index fund holds a broad market at low cost, so the investor does not have to identify which individual company, sector, or stock picker will win.
This is a relative promise, not a guarantee that shares will rise. Broad ownership leaves market risk intact. What it can largely avoid is the extra cost and selection risk involved in competing with other owners for a larger share of the same market. Investors collectively receive the market's return before expenses; their payments to intermediaries reduce what remains afterward. A small annual deduction becomes consequential because both investment gains and the money removed by fees have effects that compound over time.
What the Example Establishes
The anniversary edition records the spread of indexing while warning that the word index has become attached to very different products. Bogle's case concerns broad diversification, low turnover, low expenses, and long holding periods. A narrow or expensive product does not inherit those virtues merely by following an index. The difficulty of the approach is behavioral: accepting ordinary market returns can feel unsatisfactory in an industry organized around activity, rankings, and promises of something better.
