What is Mindset about?
This book asks why some people love a challenge and learn from failure while others avoid effort to protect the image of being smart. Carol S. Dweck, a psychologist, argues that a basic belief about yourself, either a fixed mindset (abilities are carved in stone) or a growth mindset (abilities can be built), shapes how people handle school, sports, work, love and parenting. She builds the case with her own studies, such as the effects of praising ability versus effort, and with stories of Thomas Edison, Michael Jordan, Enron and Jack Welch, and she also covers a "false growth mindset" and how mindsets can be changed.

Why Dweck wrote this book
Carol S. Dweck says her students once sat her down and told her to write this book. They wanted people to be able to use the research they did together to make their lives better. She had wanted to write it for a long time, and it became her top priority.
Her work belongs to a part of psychology that studies the power of beliefs. Some beliefs we know about, and some we do not notice. Dweck says they strongly shape what we want and whether we get it. She also says that changing even very simple beliefs can have deep effects.
The book explains one simple belief about yourself that her research found. She calls this belief a mindset. She argues that it guides a large part of your life. Much of what we call personality grows out of it, she says, and so does much of what may hold us back from reaching our potential.
Dweck promises that readers will better understand great achievers in science, art, sports and business, and also people who never reached their promise. She says they will understand the people close to them, such as a partner, a boss, friends and children, and learn how to free their own potential and their children's. She claims that no earlier book has explained this mindset and shown people how to use it.
How the book is built
Dweck fills each chapter with accounts of people from her research. She also uses stories from the news and from her own life, so readers can see the mindsets at work. She says she changed most names and personal details to protect privacy. Sometimes she joined several people into one to make a point clearer, and some conversations are re-created from memory as well as she could.
At the end of each chapter, and throughout the last chapter, she shows ways to use the lessons. These help readers notice the mindset that guides their life, understand how it works, and change it if they wish.
This updated edition has three additions. One is a new study of mindsets in whole organizations, in the business chapter. Dweck says that a whole organization, not only a person, can have a mindset. Another is a section on "false growth mindset" in the chapter for parents, teachers and coaches. Dweck added it after learning that people were using the growth mindset idea in many creative ways that were not always accurate. The third is a section on the journey to a true growth mindset in the last chapter, because many people asked how to take that journey.
Dweck also says she wrote in an informal style. She sometimes breaks grammar rules on purpose, for example by starting sentences with "and" or "but", to sound more direct.
She ends with a hope. Her work has been about growth, and it has helped her own growth. She wishes it will do the same for the reader.
