What is Rich Dad Poor Dad about?

Robert Kiyosaki uses two father figures to compare working for a paycheck with learning how money moves through a household. His six lessons focus on cash flow, assets, business structures, opportunities, and practical skills; later chapters examine fear, habits, and first steps through personal and historically dated investment stories.

Why money learning is missing

Sharon Lechter opens with a question: does a good school education also teach a person how to manage money? She describes families who expect strong grades and a secure career to lead to financial safety. Yet people may earn good salaries and still struggle with debt, taxes, housing costs, or retirement plans. Their argument is that job training and money training are different. A professional may know a great deal about a field and little about reading a household balance sheet. This is the problem the book sets out to address.

The introduction reflects the authors' experience and the economy of their time. It is not evidence that formal education has no value. In fact, the book repeatedly asks readers to learn more. Its target is a missing part of education: how money enters a household, where it goes, and whether anything is being built that can support the household later. The question is useful even if a reader never buys an investment.

Two kinds of preparation

Lechter recalls her son questioning why school mattered if well-educated adults still worked hard and carried debt. After another son struggled with credit cards, her husband introduced her to Kiyosaki and his CASHFLOW learning game. Playing it with her daughter showed her how little some adults knew about money records. Kiyosaki then tells the story of two father figures who gave him different lessons. One valued academic achievement and a dependable job. The other treated money as a subject to study and an asset as something to build. This framing makes a familiar choice more precise: learning a profession can help someone earn; learning about cash flow can help someone decide what to do with earnings.

The book does not establish that one kind of preparation replaces the other. Its practical invitation is to look beyond the next paycheck. A reader can ask what skills, savings, and income sources a household is developing, while still valuing a job, a school, or a degree. Financial terms become useful only when they help make those decisions clearer.

How to read the argument

Kiyosaki presents six lessons and then later chapters about obstacles and first steps. He often tells stories of his own deals, friends, and teachers. Those stories show how he thinks. They do not tell us what usually happens to everyone who follows him. Some prices and tax examples belong to an earlier United States setting. Some investment examples involve large losses or risks even when the author emphasizes the wins. This summary will keep the sequence of his argument and explain his main examples, while labeling forecasts, anecdotes, and personal opinions as such.

The most useful reading question is not “Will this make me rich?” It is “What does this example teach about earning, spending, assets, debt, knowledge, and choices?” A learner can use that lens to understand the book without treating a reported deal as a promise or a dated tactic as current financial or legal advice.
