What is The Richest Man in Babylon about?

In stories set in Babylon, George S. Clason asks why people who earn money may still have nothing saved. Arkad, Dabasir, and other characters explore saving part of each payment, choosing expenses, protecting and using savings, repaying debt, and preparing for future needs. The book also shows the limits of luck, impulsive deals, and work without a plan.

Money has three jobs

Clason opens by saying that people need to understand money before they can handle it well. His aim is to help readers acquire money, keep some of it, and make that saved part earn more. These are different jobs. Earning an income does not by itself create savings. Savings do not grow by themselves unless they are put to work with care. The short tales that follow use Babylon as a setting for teaching these steps.

Why these stories matter

The foreword also explains the book's hopeful tone. Clason wants financial understanding to help readers prepare for future needs as well as present pleasures. He says many earlier readers and business people valued the stories. That is his introduction to the work, not evidence that every reader will become wealthy. The useful question to carry forward is how a person can build a lasting surplus from the money that passes through their hands.

Read the tales as lessons

The foreword is also a guide to reading the stories. The characters use coins, lending, trade, and property in an imagined ancient city, while Clason speaks to people in his own era. The point of a tale is the decision it helps a reader examine. For example, a lesson about keeping money has to be understood alongside the household's need to eat and the risk of putting savings into an unsafe deal. The chapters build that larger picture step by step rather than offering one trick that solves every money problem.
