The Chorus Tells the Story First
The play opens with a speaker called the Chorus. He is not one of the characters. He stands alone and talks straight to the audience.
The Chorus says the story happens in the city of Verona. Two families live there. They have the same high rank, and neither is above the other. But they are enemies. Their anger is very old, and it has broken out again into fighting. The Chorus says the fighting is so bad that citizens stain their hands with the blood of other citizens.
These two families will have children, and the Chorus says a pair of young lovers will come from them. One is born into each family. He calls them star-crossed, which means the stars have marked them for bad luck. Their lives will be sad, and both of them will die.
Why the Ending Comes First
The Chorus keeps no secret. He says plainly that the deaths of the two lovers will finally bury their parents' quarrel. Only the loss of the children is strong enough to end the families' anger. So the audience knows the ending before the story begins. They do not watch to learn what happens. They watch to see how it happens, and why.
The Chorus also names what the play is about: a love marked by death from the start, and the long anger of the parents. This story, he says, will fill the two hours of the performance. He asks the audience to listen with patient ears, and he promises that the actors will work hard to make up for anything that is missing.
The Prologue gives the audience three things to watch. One is hate that passes from parents to children. Another is love that grows inside that hate. The last is the price that is paid. The Chorus never says who started the feud. He calls it only an old grudge.
