Many kinds of human
Harari starts long before cities and nations. For most of its history, the genus *Homo* included several human species. Neanderthals lived in parts of Europe and western Asia; *Homo erectus* survived for a long time in Asia; smaller humans lived on Flores. Our species, *Homo sapiens*, was one branch among others. This matters because today's picture of one human species was not always normal. Large brains and upright walking gave early humans abilities, but also costs. A big brain uses much energy. Walking upright made hands available for other work, yet it changed the spine and narrowed the pelvis. The book does not claim that evolution aimed toward us or that a larger brain automatically made early humans powerful. It asks how an animal that was once one of several humans became the only human species left.
Fire, contact, and uncertainty
Early humans were not immediately rulers of the food chain. Harari pictures them sometimes taking marrow from bones after larger predators had eaten. Fire later helped them stay safe, manage land, and cook food. Cooking made some foods easier to chew and digest, though its precise role in brain evolution remains a theory. When Sapiens spread beyond Africa, they met other humans. DNA evidence in the book supports some interbreeding with Neanderthals and Denisovans, while it does not imply a complete merger. The other species eventually vanished. Competition, violence, disease, and changing environments could all have mattered, but the source does not establish one cause. The lesson is to separate the known outcome from the still uncertain path that led to it.
