Work worth beginning

Phil Knight begins with a young man running before sunrise in Oregon. He has finished university, business school, and military service, yet he cannot see a future that feels like his own. The usual signs of preparation do not answer a harder question: what kind of work would make him want to get up each morning? Running offers a clue. It can be painful and repetitive, but the effort has meaning because the runner cares about the activity itself. Knight wants work that can hold his attention in that way. His ambition starts with a search for a life, before it becomes a plan for a large company.

An uncertain starting point

He has an idea about importing running shoes from Japan. He cannot prove that it will work, and the older man telling the story knows how much uncertainty the younger man faced. The opening therefore holds two things together: the need to begin without complete assurance, and the limits of knowing where a beginning will lead. Knight's later success should not make his early decision look safe or inevitable. This is his account of one uncertain path, including the help, mistakes, sacrifices, and fortunate turns that allowed it to continue. The energy of that first run gives the story its starting point, not a formula that guarantees the same result for someone else.
