What is Siddhartha about?

Hermann Hesse's novel follows Siddhartha, an invented Brahman's son in the age of the Buddha, who leaves home to find peace in the self and finds that no teacher, fasting or meditation can give it to him. After parting from the Buddha, he lives as a merchant and as the pupil of the courtesan Kamala, falls into despair, and is taught by the ferryman Vasudeva to listen to a river. The story is built on the contrast between searching and finding, on the claim that wisdom can be lived but not passed on, and on the river as an image of the oneness of all life.

A Loved Son Without Joy

Hermann Hesse begins his novel in an Indian town beside a river. Siddhartha, the handsome son of a Brahman, grows up there among boats, fig trees and a mango grove. A Brahman belongs to the priestly class, and Siddhartha's father is a respected scholar. Hesse's Siddhartha is an invented seeker who lives in the age of the Buddha, so the novel is a story, not a biography of the Buddha.

From boyhood Siddhartha joins the talks of the wise men, learns from his father, and practises debate and meditation with his friend Govinda. He can already say the holy word "Om" silently with every breath, and he can feel the Atman, the eternal self, deep inside him.

Everyone around Siddhartha is proud of him. His father expects a great priest, his mother is happy just to watch him walk and sit, and the young women of the town admire him. Govinda loves him most of all. Govinda does not want the ordinary life of a Brahman, among lazy priests and greedy sellers of spells, and hopes to follow Siddhartha anywhere, as his friend and servant.

Yet Hesse shows that Siddhartha is the one person who finds no joy in himself. Love, good manners, daily washing rituals and offerings leave his heart empty. Restless dreams begin to trouble him.

A Thirst That Teachers Cannot Quench

Siddhartha begins to sense that love will not satisfy him forever, and that his teachers have already given him the best of what they know. The daily washing rituals clean the body, but they cannot wash away sin or calm the spirit. He even doubts that the god Prajapati made the world, and wonders whether the gods, like people, are bound by time and death. Perhaps only the Atman deserves worship, but the wisest men cannot show anyone the way to it.

Siddhartha respects the holy books, which teach that a person's soul is the whole world. His question is who actually lives this knowledge, instead of only knowing it. Even his noble father must wash away sin again every day. To Siddhartha, his father seems a thirsty man who is still searching, not a man at peace. Siddhartha decides that the source of peace must be found inside one's own self, and that every other search is only a detour.

This is his thirst. Another verse promises that whoever knows the Brahman, here meaning the highest reality, enters the heavenly world each day. Sometimes that world feels close, but he has never fully reached it, and he knows no teacher who has.

One evening he meditates with Govinda under a banyan tree. He repeats a verse in which Om is the bow, the soul is the arrow and the Brahman is the target. He sinks so deep into stillness that he does not hear Govinda call his name.

Leaving Home for the Samanas

Three Samanas once pass through the town. Samanas are wandering ascetics, people who give up comfort and desire. Hesse paints them as thin, sunburnt strangers to the world, driven by merciless self-denial. That evening Siddhartha tells Govinda that he will join them at dawn. Govinda turns pale, because he senses that Siddhartha's fate is beginning, and his own with it.

Siddhartha then asks his father for permission. The father stays silent for a long time, says he is angry, and forbids him to ask again. Then he goes to bed. Siddhartha does not argue or leave. He stands with folded arms all night. Every hour the sleepless father checks through a small window, and every time his son has not moved. The father's anger turns to worry, unrest and sadness.

Before dawn the father warns Siddhartha that he will grow tired and even die. Siddhartha calmly agrees that he will die, yet says he has always obeyed his father. Then the father sees that his son's knees are trembling but his face is not, and he understands that Siddhartha has already left home in spirit.

The father gives conditional permission. If Siddhartha finds bliss in the forest, he should come back and teach it. If he finds only disappointment, he should return and make offerings with his father again. As Siddhartha leaves the town, Govinda rises from where he has waited by the last hut and joins him. Hesse shows the first costs of the search: a father's sleepless night, and a friend who follows Siddhartha rather than a path of his own.
