What is Stay Alive, My Son about?

This is a first-person survivor's account of the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia, told by Pin Yathay, an engineer who is forced out of Phnom Penh on 17 April 1975 and loses much of his family to forced labour, starvation and disease over the next two years. He shows how the regime ruled through Angkar, the divide between Ancient People and New People, informers, self-criticism meetings and "hot education", and he asks why educated, comfortable people like himself ignored the warnings. His own choices, such as hiding dollars, forging passes, acting deaf and mute and leaving his sick son in a hospital, lead to a jungle escape to Thailand in June 1977 and to questions about justice and guilt.

A country turned into a nightmare

Pin Yathay says that the Khmer Rouge revolution turned the Cambodia of his childhood into a nightmare. In his view, the revolution saw enemies everywhere and set out to destroy people, family life, learning, faith and even love.

He believes it mostly succeeded. Cities, money, schools and the arts were condemned. Millions of people were driven from their homes, made to do hard labour, starved or killed. In his words, the whole country became "one vast concentration camp".

Why Pin Yathay wrote this book

In just two years, Pin Yathay lost seventeen members of his family and more friends than he can count. He wrote the book to keep their memory alive. He wants his family's pain to stand for what happened to millions.

Pin Yathay warns that fanatics can turn fine ideas like justice and equality into cruel rule. The result, he says, is an "equality of misery", where everyone suffers alike. He prays that history will not repeat itself, and hopes the book can help prevent such horrors.
