What is The Alchemist about?

Paulo Coelho's novel follows Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd who sells his flock to chase a twice-repeated dream of treasure at the Egyptian Pyramids, and this edition opens with Coelho's foreword naming four obstacles to following a personal calling. Its central idea is the Personal Legend, what a person has always wanted to do, which the book says the whole universe helps a person pursue if they read omens and learn the wordless Language of the World. Santiago's road runs through a theft in Tangier, a crystal merchant who never makes his pilgrimage to Mecca, an Englishman studying alchemy, Fatima at an oasis, and an alchemist who teaches him to listen to his heart and face the fear of failure.

A Calling and Its First Two Obstacles

Paulo Coelho writes this foreword in November 2002. By then The Alchemist has been translated into fifty-six languages and has sold more than twenty million copies. When the book was about to appear in English, Coelho was still struggling as a writer, and many voices called his path impossible. Asked for the secret of the book's success, he honestly answers that he does not know.

Instead, he offers an idea. Like Santiago, the shepherd boy in the novel, every person has a personal calling. Coelho describes it as a blessing from God, the path God chose for each life. Doing something with real enthusiasm, he says, is a sign of following it. Yet many people lack the courage to face their dream, and Coelho names four obstacles.

The first obstacle starts in childhood, when people hear that what they want is impossible. Over the years, prejudice, fear and guilt pile up on top of the calling until it is buried out of sight. Coelho insists it is still there. The second obstacle is love: people fear that chasing a dream will hurt those close to them. People who truly wish someone well want that person to be happy and are ready to walk the road with them. For him, love pushes a person forward instead of holding them back.

Defeat, and the Fear of Winning

The third obstacle is the fear of defeat. Coelho says people who fight for a dream suffer more when it fails, because they cannot pretend they never wanted it. The path of a calling is no easier than any other. It asks for patience in hard times and trust that the Universe is helping, even when it is not clear how. Are defeats necessary? Coelho answers that, necessary or not, they happen, because beginners lack experience and make many mistakes. For him, the secret of life is to fall seven times and get up eight.

Why choose the harder road? Coelho argues that once defeats are overcome, a person feels greater joy and confidence and begins to live with enthusiasm. He also compares two kinds of pain. Sudden, sharp suffering passes quickly, but suffering that seems bearable can last for years and leave a bitterness that never goes away.

The fourth obstacle comes when the dream is almost within reach: the fear of getting it. Coelho quotes Oscar Wilde, "Each man kills the thing he loves," and agrees. Ordinary people, he says, feel guilty once success becomes possible. They think of all those who failed and feel they do not deserve more, forgetting what they suffered and gave up to get this far. Coelho has seen many people make one foolish mistake after another when their goal was a single step away. He calls this obstacle the most dangerous, because giving up joy and success can look almost holy. His answer is self-belief: a person who feels worthy of what they fought for becomes a tool in God's hands, helps the Soul of the World and understands why they are alive.
