What is The Art of Happiness about?

Psychiatrist Howard Cutler records long conversations with the Dalai Lama on whether happiness can be trained like a skill, arguing that it depends more on the state of the mind than on events or possessions. The Dalai Lama's approach sorts mental states by whether they lead to happiness or suffering, then replaces anger, hatred and craving with compassion, patience and a wider perspective, while Cutler adds psychology research and case histories on adaptation, brain plasticity and the failure of venting anger. The book is distinctive for treating intimacy as many kinds of closeness rather than one romantic partner, for its giving-and-receiving meditation called Tong-Len, and for its view of spirituality as basic human goodness that does not depend on religion.

A Shared Wish for Happiness

The Dalai Lama wrote this preface for the tenth anniversary edition of The Art of Happiness. He says the book grew out of many hours of talk with his old friend Howard Cutler, an American psychiatrist. Cutler spoke for modern science. The Dalai Lama spoke for the Buddhist view of the mind and of human well-being.

The Dalai Lama says the two men tried to keep their talks at a basic human level. At that level, differences of gender, race, religion, culture and language fade away. Every person wants happiness, and no one wants to suffer. He calls this the most basic reality of human life. He adds that people's lives are deeply connected, and he believes the way humans treat each other and the world should rest on these simple truths.

Compassion Helps Others and Oneself

The Dalai Lama is glad that happiness is now studied more seriously, even by scientists. He repeats his old belief that compassion brings happiness both to others and to oneself. Helping others, he explains, widens a person's view. Personal problems then shrink to a more realistic size and feel less heavy.

How can compassion be grown? Feeling connected to others, he says, opens the heart, which he calls the "inner door". It also helps to become more aware of one's own moods and emotions. Together these build a steady base inside a person. Researchers ask whether kind people become happy or happy people become kind. He thinks the order matters little in practice, because both can be trained. He points to brain plasticity, the brain's power to change, which still works late in life. He notes that he himself is in his seventies.
