What is The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined about?

Steven Pinker examines historical declines in several forms of violence and asks how institutions, ideas and human psychology helped produce them. This independent summary follows the book’s 2011 perspective, separating broad trends from uneven evidence and exploring why protection, cooperation, rights and reason can restrain cruelty without making peace inevitable.

Seeing Change Beyond the Headlines

News makes violence easy to see and peace easy to overlook. A murder produces a story; millions of people completing an ordinary day usually do not. Steven Pinker asks readers to compare the present with the past using historical records and rates, rather than the examples that come most readily to mind. His argument is that several forms of violence have declined over long periods, sometimes dramatically. He is describing different changes in different settings, not a steady improvement everywhere or an end to cruelty.

This summary follows the book's 2011 perspective. Its observations about wars, crime and political change belong to that historical endpoint. Later events cannot be assumed to continue the patterns it describes. Even within the period covered, the evidence varies: a modern victimization survey, a medieval court record and an archaeological burial site answer different questions with different degrees of uncertainty. The challenge is to identify patterns without turning approximate comparisons into certainty.

Human Capacities and Historical Change

Pinker organizes the history around six developments. Early states sometimes suppressed raiding and feuding. European societies later experienced a long decline in homicide. Humanitarian reforms challenged accepted cruelty, slavery and arbitrary punishment. After the Second World War, major powers increasingly avoided war with one another; after the Cold War, several measures of organized conflict also fell. Meanwhile, rights movements challenged violence against racial minorities, women, children, gay people and animals.

These developments do not require a newly peaceful human species. People retain capacities for exploitation, dominance, revenge, cruelty and destructive ideology, alongside sympathy, restraint, moral judgment and reasoning. Institutions and social conditions can encourage some capacities while limiting others. The book therefore combines two questions: what changed in the historical record, and what might explain the change? Its answer is an argument about contingent human achievements. Progress can be studied and valued without assuming that it will take care of itself.
