What is The Obstacle Is the Way about?

Ryan Holiday asks why most people freeze when a plan is blocked, and argues that the fault lies in how they see and respond to the obstacle rather than in the obstacle itself. Drawing on Stoic thinkers such as Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus, he organises his method into three disciplines, Perception, Action and Will, and tests each against historical cases including Rockefeller, Grant at Vicksburg, Edison, Stockdale and Lincoln. Distinctive tools include the premortem, apatheia, the flank attack, amor fati, memento mori and the Inner Citadel.

Marcus Aurelius writes for himself

Ryan Holiday opens with the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who sat down to write in the year 170. Holiday offers three possible places: a tent at the war front, the palace in Rome, or the games at the Colosseum. Marcus wrote only for himself.

Holiday calls that one paragraph among history's best formulas for overcoming bad situations. The goal is to thrive because of what happens, not just in spite of it. Little of it was new, Holiday admits, since Marcus borrowed from teachers such as Epictetus and Seneca. But Holiday says Marcus stated the idea more clearly than any of them. Marcus wrote that actions can be blocked but intentions cannot, because the mind adapts. He ended with "What stands in the way becomes the way."

A shared tradition

Holiday notes that Marcus lived these words. In about nineteen years as emperor, he faced near-constant war, a plague, a plot against his throne by a close ally, a shrinking treasury and an incompetent, greedy stepbrother as co-emperor.

From what is known, Holiday says, Marcus treated each problem as a chance to practise a virtue, such as patience or creativity, and rarely gave way to anger.

Holiday then argues that the same idea runs through history, from the Renaissance to the civil rights movement. Readers are its heirs, he says, and can choose to be blocked by obstacles or to move through them.
