Odysseus Is Kept Far From Home
The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus (called Ulysses in this translation), the clever Greek hero who helped destroy the city of Troy. The poem asks the Muse, a goddess of song, to tell of his long and painful journey home. His men all died through their own foolishness: they ate the cattle of the Sun-god.
All the other Greeks who survived are home. Odysseus is not. The goddess Calypso keeps him on her lonely island and wants to marry him. He longs only for his wife and his own island, Ithaca. After many years, the gods decide that he should go home, although the poem warns that his troubles will not end there. Only Poseidon (called Neptune), god of the sea, still hates him, because Odysseus blinded Poseidon's son, the Cyclops Polyphemus.
Poseidon is away at a feast, so the other gods meet in the house of Zeus (called Jove), their king. Zeus complains that people blame the gods for troubles they bring on themselves. Athena (called Minerva) answers that her heart aches for Odysseus. Zeus agrees to help, because Poseidon cannot stand alone against all the gods. Athena's plan has two parts. Hermes (called Mercury) will tell Calypso to let Odysseus go. Athena herself will go to Ithaca and give courage to Odysseus's son, Telemachus.
Athena Visits Telemachus in Ithaca
Athena (called Minerva) arrives in Ithaca disguised as a visitor named Mentes. She finds the suitors, men who want to marry Penelope, the wife of Odysseus (called Ulysses), feasting on his food. Telemachus, unhappy among them, welcomes the stranger and seats her away from the noise. He believes his father is dead. His mother neither refuses to marry nor chooses a husband, so the suitors are eating up the house.
Mentes feels sure Odysseus is alive and will soon return. Her plan is this. Telemachus should call an assembly and order the suitors to go home. Then he should sail to Pylos and Sparta for news from the old heroes Nestor and Menelaus. If his father is dead, he should hold a funeral and think how to kill the suitors. Athena flies away like a bird, and Telemachus understands that a god has visited him.
Now he is bolder. When Penelope asks the singer Phemius to stop his sad song about the return from Troy, Telemachus sends her back to her work and says he is master here. He tells the suitors he will order them out at tomorrow's assembly. Antinous mocks him, but Telemachus stands firm. That night he lies awake, thinking about the journey.
