What is The Prince about?
Niccolò Machiavelli examines how rulers acquire power, build support, and respond to danger. Through historical comparisons, he connects military independence, public reputation, advice, and changing circumstances, while exposing the conflict between political survival and morally admirable conduct.

Knowledge offered as a gift
Machiavelli opens with a gift that is meant to be useful to someone who governs. Instead of offering expensive possessions, he offers an account of political action, assembled from his experience of contemporary affairs and his reading of ancient history. He presents the small book as a way for its recipient to gain quickly what took its author considerable effort to learn. The dedication therefore establishes both a subject and a purpose: knowledge about rulers is being offered to a ruler.
The view from below
His modest social position does not, he argues, disqualify him from understanding princes. Someone standing below a mountain can see its shape, just as someone looking from a height can see the plain. In the same way, the governed may understand rulers from a perspective rulers lack. Yet this is also a personal appeal for recognition from a powerful patron. The work begins inside the unequal political world it will analyze, with its author hoping that insight can make him valuable to someone above him.
