What is The Secret about?
Rhonda Byrne presents the “law of attraction,” the claim that repeated thoughts and feelings draw matching events into a person's life. Through teacher quotations and personal stories, the book applies this idea to goals, money, relationships, health, public problems, identity, and purpose, while offering ask-believe-receive, gratitude, and visualization as its main practices.

A Book Born from Crisis
Rhonda Byrne opens with a personal crisis: exhaustion, her father's sudden death, and conflict at work and at home. Her daughter Hayley then gave her a century-old book. Byrne says this book gave her a glimpse of a hidden principle that she began tracing through religion, philosophy, literature, and the lives of famous people. She describes finding modern teachers, making a film, and treating helpful coincidences during production as evidence that the principle was working. This is the origin story Byrne gives for The Secret. It is a personal interpretation of events, not a controlled test of cause and effect. The important point is how strongly that interpretation shaped the project: she moved from despair to a sense of purpose, organized a team around one idea, and completed the film within months. The foreword therefore presents both an emotional turning point and the book's method. Byrne reads results through the lens of attraction and asks the reader to do the same.
Promises and Evidence
After the film appeared, Byrne says the team received thousands of letters. Writers credited The Secret with money, homes, partners, jobs, better school results, repaired relationships, and recovery from pain or disease. She presents this range as evidence that one principle can work in every area of life. The claims grow from a feather to ten million dollars and from ordinary happiness to recovery from a deathbed. Byrne does not compare these reports with unsuccessful attempts or examine other causes. They are testimonials: accounts of how viewers understood what happened to them. The foreword nevertheless treats them as confirmation and makes its broadest promise—that there is nothing a person cannot do, have, or become through this knowledge. This establishes the scale of the book's argument while also showing its evidence limit, especially for health and money.
How the Teachers Speak
The book combines Byrne's narration with words from twenty-four teachers who were filmed at different places and times. She says they nevertheless speak as one voice. Their remarks, short quotations from older writers, and modern personal stories are arranged to make the law of attraction seem ancient, universal, and practical. Byrne also explains why she sometimes capitalizes the word “You”: she wants the reader to feel personally addressed. The production becomes the foreword's first example of the teaching. Byrne flew from Australia before securing a single teacher; within seven weeks the team had filmed fifty-five people and more than 120 hours of material, and the film appeared eight months later. She says the team “magnetized” the people and events it needed. The same sequence also included a fixed goal, a production team, travel, interviews, and months of work, so the supernatural cause remains Byrne's interpretation.
Byrne says she first traced the idea through Plato, Shakespeare, Newton, Hugo, Beethoven, Lincoln, Emerson, Edison, and Einstein, then searched for living practitioners. She describes accidental Internet links and introductions between teachers as guidance from the Secret. The foreword therefore teaches the reader how she will interpret coincidence throughout the book: an event that advances a fixed intention is counted as attraction.
