Think and Grow Rich — Book Summary

What is Think and Grow Rich about?
Napoleon Hill presents thirteen principles for turning a definite desire into organized plans and sustained action. Through stories about inventors, industrialists, salespeople, and his own family, he links purpose, faith, specialized knowledge, imagination, decision, persistence, cooperation, and control of fear; Arthur R. Pell’s preface explains how this edition adds later examples while retaining Hill’s philosophy.

A secret left unnamed
Hill says Andrew Carnegie challenged him to spend at least twenty years studying successful people and then make their shared method available to others. Carnegie gave him the idea indirectly and watched to see whether he would recognize it. Hill follows the same design in the book: he says the secret appears in every chapter but refuses to name it, because discovering it is meant to prepare the reader to use it. He presents his long study and the later careers of famous people as fulfillment of Carnegie’s challenge. The preface reports Hill’s account; it does not show a method for independently testing whether one hidden principle caused their success.
Large promises need caution
The original preface promises that people who are ready for the secret may gain money, recognition, happiness, and freedom. Hill names Edison, Ford, Rockefeller, Schwab, Roosevelt, Wilson, and many others as people whose achievements support his conclusion. He says he studied hundreds of well-known figures, passed the secret to more than one hundred thousand people, and never knew a person of great achievement who lacked it. These are sweeping claims drawn from selected success stories. The preface does not describe unsuccessful comparison cases, selection rules, interview records, or a way to separate the proposed principles from education, capital, connections, historical conditions, and luck.
