What is Think Like a Monk about?

Jay Shetty draws on his years of training in an Indian ashram to ask how ordinary people can quiet an anxious, ego-driven "monkey mind" and live with purpose. Organized around three stages of letting go, growing and giving, the book works through identity, negativity, fear, intention, dharma, routine, ego, gratitude, relationships and service, using exercises such as the Why Ladder, Spot Stop Swap, the Companion Audit and the Quadrants of Potential. It pairs these with breathwork, visualization and chanting meditations and a daily practice, drawing on the Bhagavad Gita, Zen and Cherokee parables and research Shetty cites.

A Monk Who Seemed Truly Happy

Jay Shetty was eighteen, in his first year at Cass Business School in London, when a friend invited him to hear a monk speak. Shetty preferred talks by business leaders, but he went anyway.

The monk, Gauranga Das, spoke about selfless sacrifice. He had studied at IIT Bombay, one of India's hardest universities to enter, then left that path. Yet he seemed happier than anyone Shetty had met. Shetty wanted to be near people with the values he wanted, rather than the things he wanted.

Shetty says science backs this up. In 2002, University of Wisconsin researchers recorded the brain of the Tibetan monk Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche as he meditated. His brain switched into meditation almost instantly, with no warm-up. Another monk, Matthieu Ricard, showed the highest level of gamma waves ever recorded, brain signals linked to attention and learning. Twenty-one other monks also scored higher than non-meditators, though Shetty gives few details.

Monks Are Made, Not Born

Shetty argues that monks are the experts in calm and purpose, and that nobody is born a monk. Becoming one is a mindset that anyone can adopt.

Shetty did not grow up in an ashram, a community where monks live and train. He was obedient until fourteen, then got into trouble and was suspended three times. His school asked him to leave, but he promised to change, and he did. In college he came to value hard work, yet felt something deeper was missing. For four years he studied in London and spent holidays with monks in Mumbai. After graduating, he joined the ashram. Three years later, Gauranga Das advised him to leave and share what he had learned. Shetty now calls himself a "former" monk, because he is married.

His teachers built on the Vedas, Indian scriptures at least three thousand years old, and Shetty draws often on the Bhagavad Gita. He says his book is nonsectarian and that science largely supports this old wisdom.

Monkey Mind and Monk Mind

Shetty contrasts two ways of thinking. The monkey mind jumps from thought to thought, overthinks and chases quick pleasure. The monk mind looks for the root of a problem, lives with intention, cares about others and seeks meaning. Shetty calls this shift necessary; its goal is a life free of ego, envy and anxiety.

On his first day of monk school, Shetty met a child monk, no older than ten, who had just taught five-year-olds to breathe. The boy said breath is the one thing that stays with a person from birth to death, and every emotion changes it. Shetty took two lessons: look at the root of a problem, not the leaf, and anyone, even a child, can be a monk.

The book has three stages: let go of what holds you back, grow with purpose, and give to others. It also describes three meditations: breathwork, visualization and chanting.
