Thinking in Bets — Book Summary
សង្ខេបសៀវភៅ «គិតដោយថ្លឹងប្រូបាប៊ីលីតេ»
What is Thinking in Bets about?
Annie Duke, a former professional poker player with a background in cognitive psychology, asks why people judge a decision by how it turned out when hidden information and luck always play a part. She argues that every choice is a bet on an uncertain future, and shows how to separate luck from skill, say how sure you are, and learn from outcomes without fooling yourself. The book builds its method from ideas such as resulting, hindsight bias, decision groups with a charter, Merton's CUDOS rules for dissent, Ulysses contracts, scenario planning, backcasting and premortems.

From Student to Poker Player
Annie Duke planned a life of study and research. By the age of twenty-six, she had studied English and psychology at Columbia University. She had then gone to graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania to study cognitive psychology, the science of how people think. But she became ill just before finishing her dissertation, the long research paper that completes a doctorate. She left Penn, got married, and moved to a small town in Montana. She needed money. Her brother Howard, a professional poker player, suggested she try the legal poker games in Billings, Montana. The idea was not as strange as it sounds. Duke grew up in a family that loved games, and she had watched Howard play and had played a few small games herself.
Duke planned poker as a short break and a hobby. She meant to go back to her studies. Instead, poker became her job for about twenty years. When she stopped playing in 2012, she had won a World Series of Poker gold bracelet and two other big titles, and more than $4 million in tournaments. Howard won more than $6.4 million in tournament prizes.
Duke says she never really left her studies. Poker became a new kind of lab for learning how people decide. A hand of poker takes about two minutes, and she could make up to twenty decisions in it. Each hand ends with money won or lost, so the feedback comes fast. But Duke says winning and losing are only loose signals of how good a decision was. A player can win a lucky hand and lose an unlucky one. That makes it hard to learn from results.
A Bet Is a Decision About the Future
Annie Duke had to solve this learning puzzle, or the tough Montana ranchers at her poker table would keep taking her money. Early in her career, she met some excellent players. Over time they taught her what a bet really is: a decision about an uncertain future. Duke says that treating her decisions as bets helped her in three ways. She avoided common decision traps. She learned from results in a more reasonable way. And she kept emotion out of her choices as much as she could.
In 2002 a hedge-fund manager asked her to share poker lessons with a group of traders. Since then she has spoken to professionals in many fields. She says the same approach helps with decisions in financial markets, business planning, managing staff, law and starting companies. She says practical work-arounds can close the gap between the decisions we want and what we do. Her promise is that thinking in bets can improve decisions in every part of life. We can learn to separate how good a decision was from how it turned out. We can learn to say “I’m not sure” and plan for different futures. We can react less in the moment. We can build small groups of people who search for the truth together. And we can ask our past and future selves for help, so that fewer decisions are driven by feeling.
Duke is also honest about the limits. Thinking in bets did not make her always rational or free of emotion. She still makes plenty of mistakes. Mistakes, strong feelings and losing, she says, are part of being human. But the approach moved her toward being more objective, accurate and open-minded, and these small changes add up over time.
The book is not about poker strategy or gambling. It is about what poker taught her about learning and deciding. Duke starts from one claim: exactly two things decide how our lives turn out, the quality of our decisions and luck. Learning to tell the two apart is what thinking in bets is about.
