What is War and Peace about?

Leo Tolstoy's epic follows Russian families, especially the searching Pierre, the proud Prince Andrei and the lively Natasha, through peace, love and Napoleon's wars, from 1805 to the invasion of Russia and the burning of Moscow in 1812. Battles and ballrooms together show how ordinary lives are swept up by history, and what finally makes life meaningful.

Petersburg, July 1805

War and Peace does not open on a battlefield. It opens at a party. In July 1805, Anna Pavlovna Scherer, a court lady who serves the Empress, holds an evening gathering in St Petersburg. Her first guest is Prince Vasili Kuragin, a powerful courtier. Everyone talks about Napoleon, whom Anna Pavlovna calls the Antichrist, an enemy of God, and about a war that Russia may soon join.

Behind the polite talk, people follow private plans. Vasili wants a good post in Vienna for one son. He complains that his other son, Anatole, is a fool who costs him forty thousand rubles a year. Anna Pavlovna suggests a rich wife for Anatole: Princess Mary Bolkonskaya, who lives unhappily in the country with her stern old father. The novel shows at once how money and family plans hide under good manners.

Two guests matter most. Pierre Bezukhov is a big, clumsy, kind young man, back from ten years of schooling abroad. He is the illegitimate son of a rich, dying count, and he cannot choose a career. Prince Andrew Bolkonsky, Mary's brother, is clever, proud and bored. His young wife, Lise, is expecting a baby. Pierre admires Napoleon and says it is wrong to fight him for England and Austria. Andrew says he is going to war because his life at home does not suit him.

Later, at supper at home, Andrew warns Pierre not to marry until he has done everything he hopes to do, because for Andrew a wife has meant the end of freedom. Next the story moves to a noisy, warm family in Moscow, the Rostovs, whose youngest daughter is a lively thirteen-year-old named Natasha.

A broken promise and a name day

Pierre has just promised Andrew on his honor to stay away from Anatole's wild parties. On the way home he decides that such promises mean little, and he goes to Anatole's house anyway. Dolokhov, a notorious gambler and duelist who lives with Anatole, bets fifty imperials, which are gold coins, that he can drink a whole bottle of rum sitting on a third-floor window ledge with nothing to hold. He wins. Gossip later says the group tied a policeman to a bear and threw them into a canal. Dolokhov is reduced to a common soldier, and Pierre is sent back to Moscow.

In Moscow the Rostovs keep a name day for the countess and for her youngest daughter, both named Natalia. Natasha, thirteen and full of life, runs into the drawing room laughing and holding her doll Mimi. Her brother Nicholas, a student about to join the army, loves Sonya, their fifteen-year-old cousin who lives with the family. Their friend Boris Drubetskoy, a young officer, is the son of a poor relative, Princess Anna Mikhaylovna. In the conservatory Natasha kisses Boris. He says he loves her and will ask for her hand in four years. She counts the years on her fingers and agrees. To her, this game is very serious.

A dying count and a struggle over papers

Gossip at the name day also explains why Pierre matters. His father, old Count Bezukhov, is dying and has a huge fortune. People say Vasili is an heir through his wife, but the count loves Pierre best. Anna Mikhaylovna wants help for her son Boris, so she watches closely.

That night the count has a sixth stroke. Vasili visits the eldest princess of the household and tells her that the count has made a will leaving everything to Pierre. If a letter asking the Emperor to accept Pierre as a lawful son exists, Pierre will inherit all. The princess says the papers are in an inlaid portfolio, a flat case, under the count's pillow.

Anna Mikhaylovna brings Pierre to the house. He sits quietly while priests give the last rites. Outside the sickroom, Anna Mikhaylovna and the princess fight over the portfolio, and the book never says what it holds. The count dies. Vasili weeps and says that death is terrible. Anna Mikhaylovna tells Pierre she hopes he now owns a great fortune, though the will is not yet opened, and reminds him of Boris.

Bald Hills and a hard goodbye

At Bald Hills, old Prince Nicholas Bolkonsky lives by a strict daily routine. People call him "the King of Prussia." He teaches his frightened daughter Mary geometry and snaps at her mistakes. Mary receives a letter from her friend Julie, which says that Pierre is now Count Bezukhov and owns one of the largest fortunes in Russia. Mary replies that great wealth is a danger.

Andrew arrives with Lise, who is afraid of her father-in-law. He explains the war plan to his father, who mockingly sings a French song about a soldier going to war. On the last night, Mary gives Andrew a small icon, a holy picture, that their grandfather wore in battle. He promises to wear it, then admits to her that neither he nor Lise is happy.

The old prince gives his son a letter for Kutuzov and says that wives are all like that and a marriage cannot be undone. Lise faints as Andrew leaves. The old man looks at her angrily and slams his door.
